Ayurveda, the ancient healing system from India, aims to alleviate suffering by treating the root cause of disease according to our unique constitution, while promoting longevity, balance and happiness. Its sister science Yoga improves health of the body and mind with the ultimate goal of progressing spiritual awakening.Ayurvedic Me aims to ignite self awareness and healing by conveying these ancient principles in a unique way for you, treating conditions such as:

  • Stress, anxiety, depression and nervous disorders
  • Insomnia and fatigue
  • Headache and migraine
  • Skin complaints such as acne, dry and dull skin
  • Digestive complaints such as constipation, sluggish digestion, excess weight and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Low/compromised immunity and feeling 'run down'
  • Muscle tension and strain
  • Joint stiffness and arthritis
  • Menstrual problems and managing menopausal symptoms

"Health is wealth, happiness is peace of mind..." (Swami Vishnu Devananda)

Ayurveda, meaning 'knowledge of life' is the 5000 year old ancient healing system from India that promotes longevity, balance and happiness. Ayurveda aims to alleviate suffering by treating the root cause of disease according to our unique constitution, known in the ancient language Sanskrit as Prakriti. This is the unique mix of three biophysical forces (doshas): Vata, Pitta and Kapha, which comprise the elements of Ether/Air, Fire/Water and Water/Earth respectively. Less suitable life choices and general life stresses can lead to imbalance in our constitution leaving us vulnerable to those ailments and conditions to which we may be genetically and constitutionally susceptible. Harmonising more closely with the rhythms of nature and rebalancing our constitution through appropriate nutrition, herbs, exercise, relaxation and lifestyle choices together with Ayurvedic therapies, can help to restores health and prevent disease while improving our vitality and happiness.

Fascinating Facts about Elizabethan Cosmetics
elizabethan cosmetics
In the Elizabethan period, the pure, perfect woman was expected to have light hair, a pale white complexion, red cheeks and lips.  In fact, skin care was what most women worried about. Since suntan lotion had not been invented and marks on the face were very common, Elizabethan women came up with many different ways to cover up their imperfections.  Women would paint their faces very white. This makeup was called Venetian ceruse or sometimes just ceruse. It was a lead-based cosmetic item that also contained hydroxide and carbonate. Whenever a new layer of ceruse was needed, women would paint their faces without removing the first layer. This resulted in layers of makeup being on a womans face. Unfortunately, the lead did have side-effects it often turned the womans skin gray. Doctors at the time urged women to use other makeup that used tin ash or alum. Another common base for makeup at the time was talc, boiled white egg or other white products. They also used uncooked egg whites as a glaze for their skin that helped hide wrinkles!  Mercury was a common ingredient in makeup. At that time, it was used to clear the skin of spots and wrinkles, much like today's acne treatment is designed to do. However, the mercury was not treating acne; it was in fact removing the skin and corroding the flesh! If someone found that method didn't work, they might have mixed birch sap, elder leaves, and sulfur, applied it to their skin at night and removed it in the morning. Other forms of skin cleansers were made from urine, rain water, donkeys milk or red wine instead of soap-like ingredients we now use.

Elizabethan women also used red face paint stead of using blush to bring color to their cheeks. It was called fucus and was mainly used on the face and lips, although for lipstick, the most popular choice was vermillion. However, people often used a blend of beeswas and cochineal or madder-based makeup as well. Some types of rouge usually had a base of bears grease and some women even used belladonna drops to make their eyes appear more luminous.

Eye shadow was made from ground mother of pearl. Makeup pencils were made by mixing plant pigments with something called plaster of Paris; the two were mixed together, then molded into shape and left to dry in the sun. These pencils were used to fake eyelashes made of mouse fur.
